چکیده

The present study tests the effects of the decline of executive functions and spatial abilities with aging on the comprehension of a complex instructional animation. An animation of a piano mechanism was presented individually to 33 young adults and 31 elderly participants. Two presentation speeds of the animation (normal and slow) were compared in a 2× 2 experimental design. Eye movements were recorded during the learning time. Then, four executive function tests (inhibition, shifting, updating, and processing speed) and a spatial ability test (differential aptitude test) were undertaken by each participant. Results showed that the comprehension of animations was significantly affected by aging. Significant differences between young and old groups were found for executive functions and spatial abilities. Regressions on comprehension scores showed a strong significant effect of spatial ability. Like in previous research, presentation speed had no effect. Eye movement data showed this result was due to application of a compensation strategy. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The influence of visual cognitive style when learning from instructional animations and static pictures

a r t i c l e i n f o Keywords: Cognitive style Instructional animation Instructional picture Visualization ATI-effects Multimedia In a 2 × 2 design, we examined the role of visual cognitive style in two multimedia-based learning environments (text plus static pictures/animations). A statistically significant interaction was obtained for deeper comprehension: Highly developed visualizers (HDV) ...

Instructional Animations: More Complex to Learn from Than at First Sight?

This paper presents a cognitively guided set of design guidelines for instructional animations based on a review of the existing literature. The guidelines are based around a cognitive load theory framework, which assumes learners’ limited working memories must be considered for instructional animations to be effective. We propose six design guidelines: (1) animations are more beneficial for le...

Computer Animations as Learning Objects: What is an Efficient Instructional Design, and for whom?

The creation of computer animations is relatively costly and time consuming. However, their educational power is high if designed properly. It is therefore of increasing importance to establish animations with optimal instructional design properties. Commercial e-learning tools show an enhanced tendency to incorporate 3D-animations although their production is rather costly as compared to the p...

Beyond “eye-candy”: improving learning with animations

The use of animations is becoming increasingly widespread in electronic learning materials. Authoring animations is now relatively straightforward, even for university teachers without advanced computing skills. Many lecturers want to know how to convert the traditional static pictures and diagrams in textbooks into instructionally effective animated presentations. This presentation will show h...

Towards a Framework for Attention Cueing in Instructional Animations: Guidelines for Research and Design

This paper examines the transferability of successful cueing approaches from text and static visualization research to animations. Theories of visual attention and learning as well as empirical evidence for the instructional effectiveness of attention cueing are reviewed and, based on Mayer’s theory of multimedia learning, a framework was developed for classifying three functions for cueing: (1...
